During summer, owing to the scorching heat, humidity, and high temperature, we are all always looking for ways to keep ourselves refreshed and hydrated. While there are many hydrating drinks out there, among the desi options lassi and chaas seem to be the most preferred ones. They’re not only super hydrating but are also full of vitamins and minerals. But did you know that despite looking quite similar, there are certain distinguishing factors between the drinks, and one is also healthier than the other? Let’s find out more.

Elucidating, Sushma PS, Chief Dietitian, Jindal Naturecure Institute, Bangalore said, “Popular traditional Indian drinks like lassi and chaas are frequently consumed in the summer to beat the heat. Although they both have yoghurt as their base, the preparation and flavourings of the beverages vary.”

She added that compared to chaas, also known as buttermilk, which is a lighter and more savoury beverage, lassi is a creamier, thick and sweetened drink. “Although the degree of sweetness can change based on the recipe and the drinker’s preferences, lassi is much sweeter. Contrarily, chaas has a tangy taste since salt is used to season it, giving it a faint saltiness.”

Both contain yoghurt — which is rich source of protein, calcium and probiotics (that provide good bacteria to aid gut health and digestion). “They can help get rid of acidity and heartburn and make our bones stronger. The drinks are also rich in lactic acid and vitamin D, which helps boosts our immune system,” Sushma continued.

Which is healthier?

While both chaas and lassi are great beverages for the summer season, chaas is a healthier option, and more suited to those trying to lose weight.

“Weight loss is about creating a calorie deficit; you need to cut down your calorie intake and burn more calories. In such a scenario, chaas is a better alternative as it is lighter, contains less fat and fewer calories. It has almost 50% fewer calories than lassi, and almost 75% lesser fat but provides same quantity of other nutrients. So, chaas makes for a better choice over lassi. Moreover, the addition of sugar and artificial flavours in lassi can lessen its nutritional properties,” the dietitian concluded.
